Taxi house

The story begins at the intersection of a contrasting landscape defined by the concrete of the Westway and the fluidity of the Grand Union Canal, where two distinct communities merge, creating a unique moment of convergence that has inspired our creative journey.
Historically, the Westway carved up two neighborhoods, each developing different qualities. A vibrant and eclectic Golborne and Portobello Road diverged from a more formal and sophisticated Notting Hill and Ladbroke Grove area, which is beginning to merge as part of the regeneration in the area.
The proposed massing responds to be existing context by rising up to 10-storeys towards the more urban high street, while stepping down to mirror the height of the low density, low rise housing that sits to the east and south of the site. To the centre the existing Listed Buildings are opened up to the public and given back to the community to encourage a more active public square.
The breathing narrative of the project has been shaped by the dynamics and edge condition of its context. The concrete of the Westway contrasts with the serene flow of the canal, and the eclectic nature of the Windrush Generation heritage, as well as other established communities, contrasts with the refined, formal, and sophisticated Notting Hill, influencing the design and allowing the narrative to unfold organically.
